When Freedom Died the Land Went Bad

I just drove 2600 miles (4184 km) from Michigan to Oregon. During the first 1100 miles I mostly saw vast fertile farmlands until we reached the Badlands in South Dakota, where the flat plains gave way to the eroded badlands and rolling hills.
