Well,i'm back from our 14th year trip to St, George Island, in the florida panhandle. This location, can yield killer skimmers, terns, and landscape images, however our luck ran our this year... As Mother Nature, and wicked TS Debby, had other plans for us. We arrived sat, to a national hurricane forecast that would take the storm west to texas, and hopefully drop the much needed rain to that drought stricken region, and not affect us at all. Yes you guessed...
The Hurricane Center, was WRONG, and brought it straight in...
We awoke to a power outage, and 50 plus knot winds, as we got up and started peering out in between the bands of intense rain, and wind, we got to see the vinyl siding flying off the three story beach house called Beach Time. Well, sitting there in a funk, and worried, about our immediate future, i decided to grab my canon, and go out and shoot the massive surf, that was building, and threatening the island with storm surge... Amazingly, the gulf side, wicked as it was, caused little flooding, the flooding actually came form the bay side, as all the water was pushed in to the bay side, the backside of St George Island.
I managed to grab this one image, before my legs were sand blasted off! Wow, that was that intense... And yes the waves were higher than i am tall... Scary situation for sure!! We're all safe and home now, after a mandatory Evacuation from the island, however the entire area, and further north received more than 30 plus inches of rain, and wind damage, and no power for a week or more!! Oh well, i guess we'll have to see what mother nature provides for our 15th year , next summer. With that behind us, i move on to my next trip: Clark national park, Alaska, home the Giant Coastal Brown Bears... i've timed this trip for the salmon run, so fingers crossed, it should be an awesome trip! I'm going to get my act together, and start a blog, and hopefully, bring ya a travel blog for this much anticipated trip!
