A photographers favorite time of day… ‘Blue hour’, which comes from the French expression l’heure bleue, which refers to the period of twilight each morning and evening where there is neither full daylight nor complete darkness. It is special because the quality of the light at this time of day is very diffuse. The reference to ‘hour’ is a very loose definition, typically it is all but a few minutes.
Speaking of a few minutes, this image was made from a tripod, like all long exposures typically are, and the shutter was open for 4 minutes. A very dark scene to the naked eye at 5am, the light that is present gets sucked onto the camera sensor and everything that is moving gets washed out. This particular morning there were moderate 1-2 foot choppy waves and two fishermen standing at the end of the pier – none of which were edited out.
