Did you know that these hatchlings are born with their eyes open, fully feathered, and once their feathers dry out, they ready to go?
After watching a killdeer laying in the gravel, appearing quite injured, we left it alone and photographed it briefly. Soon, another killdeer came over to the "injured" one and exchanged spots. That's when we noticed that there were 3 killdeer hatchlings and an unhatched egg under the parent. As we happily continued shooting, after some time, one of the hatchlings came out from under the parent and took a great big step - up the framing of the graveled area and eventually right over the edge!
Clicked this image right as the parent looked at us to be sure that we were not a threat and as the hatchling appeared to have one of those... "Wow, what a great big world out here to explore" moments. :-)
How fascinating is Mother Nature?
