This is actually an out-take from a commercial triathlete photo shoot; one of those images that 'should have been scrapped', but somehow didn't. We had a fairly big production on this shoot - multiple athletes, big lights IN WATER, assistant, water housing and more. I was lighting the scene and this was an 'in-between' moment when the lights hadn't yet recycled, but the camera still fired.

In triathlons, the transition times are where a race can be won or lost. If you're fast, you can gain critical seconds and sometimes minutes on your competition. When it comes to the swim transition, you're finally getting out of the freezing cold early morning water, running up a slippery boat ramp while trying to find that elusive wetsuit zipper. Crowds are yelling and then a sudden rush of vertigo hits and you play pinball between a few competitors. Your mind while spinning is trying to place your bike amongst the hundreds (or thousands) of other bikes in the transition. A lot is going through your head, if you can keep your head on.

I've competed in a fair number of triathlons over the years and there's something genuine and authentic feeling here; that moment in time when you exit the water. Hope you enjoy!
