We built a rig to bury everyone waist deep in sand, while allowing them to move freely. Each of the lost souls was photographed in different configurations in the rig, allowing for a composite image that wouldn't repeat.
Each group of souls was cut out by hand in Photoshop and re-colored to match their new landscape. Souls were brought together to form the desert mountains you see in these images. No shortcuts were taken, the landscape alone took more than 100 hours of work combining thousands of people to make a realistic world made out of lost souls.
