Wolves of Yellowstone

Published May 27th, 2012

I have been fascinated by wolves for a long time. For the past several years, I've traveled to Yellowstone National Park in search of these incredible animals. This year turned out unlike any other. During a 5 day stay, I saw and photographed wolves every day. Here is a brief sample of some of the images from this year.

Family Reunion

Wolves greet each other often - it reinforces the bond of the group and confirms the status of the alpha wolf. This is what you see here. Image captured in Yellowstone National Park, WY, USA.

Anger Management

Well, if ravens attempted to steal my meal, I'd probably get ticked off - just like this Yellowstone wolf. This is the lowest ranking wolf of the pack. It had been put in it's place a few minutes prior. So it's only right that the ravens pay the price. Don't get too close.

Where is Little Red Riding Hood???

Another image from Yellowstone. A wolf surveys the landscape with only it's head showing above the sage bush.

Stay Away

A wolf in Yellowstone consumes dinner. Although it looks fierce, the wolf is clearing food from it's teeth. There were no other predators near to challenge for the food. Incidentally, dinner consisted of a bison calf that was removed from it's mother's womb by the wolf. The adult bison died several months earlier but the body was probably frozen until recently.

Breakfast

Now I know this is a rather gruesome image. This wolf, a member of the canyon pack, is having breakfast courtesy of an elk that the pack took down a day or two previously. The image was captured in Yellowstone National Park, USA.

A Glaring Look (Wolf)

This is a wild wolf in one of my favorite places - Yellowstone National Park, USA. The wolf seen here was near the site where the pack had taken down an elk. Images of that to follow as I get them processed.
