Photography is a wonderful way to explore this sweet old world. Thank you for viewing my images.
I was born on Prince Edward Island, in the Canadian Maritimes, and I make my home with my wife and daughter in Vancouver. I make my living creating maps and scanning artifacts for archaeologists, and when the universe is unfolding as it should I am also designing and laying out books, and doing other freelance graphic design.
I have a fine arts education with a specialization in art history, soundscape studies, filmmaking (with a concentration on film sound), and later, typography, graphic design, and publishing. For the past few years photography has been my primary creative outlet, an ongoing interest that began with film and the darkroom back in the 1970s and has sprung back to life with the digital age.
Photography can be an adventure in seeing and with it can come a keen sense of discovery. Sometimes I go looking for specific subjects — like an assignment where one sets a task — and at other times, images find me, and serendipity rules the day. At its best, it involves an element of play, backed by discipline and a thorough knowledge of equipment and technique. I am constantly learning the latter, which helps keep me young.
My images were shot handheld, with the exception of a few of the macro shots. I like to travel light and often need to move quickly to get some of these shots. Canon's image stabilization technology has been a real boon in this regard.
