Ball Crystal Man WILLY - Singapore - Flexible Fingers in Clark Quay

Published September 20th, 2011

Clark Quay - Located along the iconic Singapore River, Clarke Quay sits on a historical commercial site dating back to the 19th Century. Today, Clarke Quay has been boldly restored and refurbished into five beautiful waterfront godowns under a climate controlled canopy lit by coloured lighting, creating a modern and cosmopolitan ambience amidst the tradition and history.

Some info about the famous Japanese Crystal ball man - This guy was hanging out in Yoyogi park in Harajuku, Tokyo, on a Sunday afternoon. He has clearly practiced a lot! I loved the music he played during his performance. My friends and I were completely mesmerized. He has a very expressive face too, with a charming smile... it really sells the show in the end. Made me feel like a little kid.

UPDATE: This video has been up for nearly a year now and I have some information that some of my viewers will appreciate. First, the juggler's name is Okotanpe - and yes he's amazing - one of my favorite memories of Japan! Second, the song that he uses in his final act is called ソレイユ (soreiyu, spelled using katakana, meaning sun, is the Japanese pronunciation of the French word "soleil", also meaning sun). It is sung by Yoshie Nakano 中納良恵. Here's a link to the video:

The beginning of the song is by UA (ううあ) and it comes from an old Japanese folk song:

his fingers were really flexible and he could manage to handle 3 crystal balls w/o dropping them midst all the din and the noise ; he was pretty good with his social skills too -he kept the audience enthralled and engaged and the kids happy - and I loved the way he used his cool ray-ban style glasses and polka dot tshirt and the chic hat to create a cool urban look

i loved the way after the show, after saying the right things about how nice that the crowd supported him etc... he asks the children to come and drop a few coins or notes in his satiny silk read bag and they the children do - nicely -. I was wondering though about the psychology of giving - do people give more or less when they see what others give? what do you think?

these crystal balls are heavy and expensive and if they drop they will break and cause a lot of embarrassing inconvenience. the artist will have his ego shattered and it is quite a task to pick up the pieces and do it again; willy tells all of us that he has trained for 3+ years and I am reminded of the 10000 hour to expertise rule - must have done it - there is no other way to do what he does - so as my friend says be good or be at it that will make you good

to keep a crowd focused on your task is quite a talent - it is not just what you do but a whole lot depends on what you say, the music you play - your body gestures and many other strange and unrelated factors like the weather and most importantly the guilt one feels as to what is the "$" I put in the hat and what is acceptable and meaningful

Clark quay has transformed itself into such a nice entertainment and relaxing hub.... there is something for everyone and the riverside now looks very clean and not so smelly, like a few years ago. the boats here are for hire - like parties and stuff and I doubt whether there is private individual ownership boats on the river ??
