Karoo Landscapes

Published March 18th, 2012

South Africa, the Northern Cape Province.

That is where an ancient landscape unfolds and where people have worked hard and long to make a living of sparse resources. Sheep and wool, man and dog, bushmen before them hunting springbok and bigger game.

The landscape is big and empty, and has a beauty appreciated by those who stay there for a while. This is a landscape that needs to grow on you, and once it does it will stay with you wherever your travels take you next. The sky above those empty plains and hills accentuate the beauty of it all. Sometimes deep blue, but mostly dotted with a sea of soft white blobs.

The soil is often bone dry, but it does rain here now and then. Sometimes the vegetation is green and could be called lush. Thunderstorms are to be experienced here, their beauty despite temporary violence.

Sunrise and sunset in the Karoo is for the privileged few. As are the deep, dark nights when stars and planets wheel overhead, leaving one breathless in awe.

Karoo sunset

The sun has set behind the distant hill, allowing the heat of the day to subside...

The Natural Setting

The natural setting for a Quiver tree, family of Aloe's. Hillsides and buttes of the Karoo are dotted with these magnificent trees... if you know where to look for them.

The Witgat Tree

Witgat Tree, leaning against a dolorite rock, some Quiver Trees on the slope. These are just a few natural wonders of the Karoo.

Wonders of the Karoo

The landscape on top of one of the many buttes ('Koppies') is out of this world... The Karoo is a place of utter beauty for those willing and able to climb hills, brave the heat and carry a bag of photo gear.
