Snow in South Africa

It's not often that we see snow in South Africa and it's always a great event when it does. I've been waiting about 6 years to get pix like these. And there are hundreads of people out there shooting pix like there's no tomorrow.

And, of course, everybody is shooting pictures. By the thousand! And, unless you know a little trick or two, most of those people will end up with underexposed images. Why? Well the meters in cameras try to make the whole world a mid grey so when they see snow they think that is very bright grey and so underexpose everything. You want white and not great so I found that I was having to overexpose everything by about 1 stop to get the snow closer to white. It gets worse if the snow is lit by the sun. You've got to be careful though because you don't want to blow the whites out and wreck your pix. Those of you that live in much colder climes this is second nature but for those of us that are more used to sub-tropical weather this is quite a trick ;-).
