The photos that I never wanted to do.....

On the night of January 13th, 2012, I was in bed. Around 11:30pm my phone began to ring. It was the Coast Guard. They were calling all of the commercial boat operators they could locate to help out with an emergency at sea.

I immediately left the house and ran towards my boat -- making sure to grab my camera on the way out. I always make an effort to keep a camera with me and ready to use.

After approximately one hour, the crew and I arrived at Giglio Island, completely unprepared for what we were about to see.

The scene in front of us was dark and apocalyptic. The Costa Concordia cruise ship was tilted, listing at 60 degrees. Over 500 passengers had yet to abandon ship. First aid units were operating at full capacity - with the need for more help increasing quickly and considerably. The night was broken by the scanning spotlights shining from the four or five helicopters in air and the slew of boats awaiting orders from the Coast Guard.
