Autumn 2013 - My Pics So Far

Published October 20th, 2013

I'm still working pics from my Autumn outings this year, but I thought I'd write this post to at least share what I've published so far. It's been an usual Autumn in Colorado this year, with a late start, early finish, and slightly more brilliant colors than usual in the in-between. It's sure been beautiful, though! Here are some pics I took in the Maroon Bells and Buffalo Peaks areas...

Ice Lakes Basin

Published September 6th, 2013

A few weeks ago I went backpacking up into Ice Lakes Basin; outside Silverton, CO; with a friend. It was my first time exploring this particular basin, and it did not disappoint. It was immensely beautiful, and with all the streams and lakes/ponds up there, combined with recent rains, it was very green and lush. It was nice to take such a trip with a fellow photographer, too, as there was impatience at stopping for photos. :) Anyway, here are a few pics from that trip. I hope to get more uploaded soon, as I process more of them. I hope you enjoy.

You Don't Always Need A Grand Vista!

Published September 20th, 2012

Just a reminder to all you Fall color hounds that you don't always need some grand vista; some wide, glorious hillside or forest; to present a great Fall color pic. Zoom in on the details. Look at that leaf down on the trail at your feet, or close in on that tree branch right out your door. Beauty can be found in the smallest things, and sometimes you only need part of the whole. If you can't get out for some grand mountain landscape, then just focus on the individual trees themselves, even the individual leaves. Just capture that wonderful color wherever you can!

The Best Scenes Are Often Unexpected!

Published September 4th, 2012

A reminder that, when in doubt, take your camera! This photo was not part of some backcountry sojourn, some planned landscape photo shoot. No, I took this while walking to the park with my kids! I really had no intent of taking any more landscape shots that evening (had already taken quite a few on our hike that afternoon), but was simply taking my camera along to maybe get some good shots of the kids playing at the playground. On the way there, however, I was presented with this wonderful sunset scene. Man, I would have been kicking myself if I hadn't had the camera along!

Yes, I have written stories, 500px! Where are ...

Published February 22nd, 2012

Where are my old blog posts? Not that I personally have anything crucial in them, but what if I had? 500px should just be ditching our old blog posts because they launch a new format.

Bulk Uploader / Fresh Filter

Published December 2nd, 2011

Just a couple ideas for improvements/enhancements for the 500px team, the second kind of related to the first:

1.) I notice that sometimes when people create new accounts, they have many photos they want to upload all at once, as they may be moving their entire portfolio over to 500px. Or perhaps someone just has a number of photos they want to load into a new gallery specific to a recent shoot they did. 500px does currently allow one to upload multiple files at once, but the limitation is that they have to be in the same directory. If the files are in disparate directories, then the user has to go through the file selection and upload process multiple times. A nice future enhancement might be to have a more flexible uploader that allows file selection from multiple directories at once, perhaps utilizing a folder tree or something. Of course, I'm sure that's probably easier said than done, but just an idea to keep in mind...

2.) When a user does upload a crapload of files at o ...

Wide/Panoramic Thumbnails

Published November 26th, 2011

Has anyone else noticed that when they upload a wide/panoramic shot, that the thumbnail created for it looks all fuzzy, like maybe too much of the image was shoved into it or something? I wouldn't mind except that many people might just see the lack of clarity in the thumbnail and assume it's just a poorly shot pic and not even bother to look at it. Is this just a flaw in how 500px creates the thumbnails, or is there there something I should be doing differently to combat this? If you have any knowledge on the subject, please advise.

Still No Provider?

Published October 22nd, 2011

Following up on my last post about the 500px-FotoMoto debacle, I happened to look at the date a bit ago and noticed that's it now about a month (tomorrow, in fact, I believe) since the great separation. At the time I think 500px said they were going to have their new solution in place by the end of that week. Of course, I don't think anyone really though that was going to happen, as you don't go from nothing to a polished, fully integrated product in less than a week. You have to draft requirements, plan the design, code, test, fix code, test some more, than finally release. That doesn't happen in a week...

That said, they did promise it, and their lack of ability to deliver on it, with no real udpates as to progress that I've seen, just adds to the impression of lack of professionalism on their part. I mean, many photographers on here were relying on this site to sell their art. First, without a moment's notice, their entire selling platform gets yanked away from them. Then, a ...

500px and Prints

Published October 17th, 2011

So by now I'm sure all of you are aware of 500px and FotoMoto ending their relationship, leaving 500px users temporarily without a print provider. Certainly those of you who were already selling prints here are.

For those of you that have been actively selling prints here, how has this affected you? Has it damaged your business? Do you have other options setup online to direct your customers to? And what is your confidence now that 500px will be a stable provider of your printing needs in the future?

It's that last question that has me thinking. I didn't have print sales setup through 500px yet, so this recent event hasn't affected any business of mine. I'm still in the early stages of things in that regard, and need to beef up my portfolio with some quality work yet anyway. However, I was looking at how I was going to setup shop going forward, and upgrading my account to "Awesome", pointing my domain here, and using the built-in print sales feature was my top choice. It's a ...
