Dad's Severed Finger.

Published September 5th, 2012

At noon I received a panicked phone-call from my Dad. "Come to the house! Come to the hose NOW" he said.

Inside this glove... part of my Dad's finger. He dropped a huge rock on it while he was working on his new house. It took me some time to work up the courage to look. Dad didn't want to see either.

The Contents of the Glove

One tip of the middle finger of the right hand in a plastic cup. Complete with the sort of dirt you'd expect to find in a builder's glove.

I think my Dad appreciated me taking photos. Who knows, maybe one day we can look back and laugh :-/ The red you can see here is the bone.

That Brown Stuff... iodine, which was used by the nurse to clean the wound. My Dad had only "run it under a tap" before coming to A&E.

"Please do not Throw Away"

The nurses insisted that my Dad was pushed to the plastic surgery department in a wheelchair. He wasn't amused. I had to hold his finger, which by now was on ice.

Cut Here --->

Another bandage! Sadly Dad was informed by the plastic surgeon that his finger couldn't be saved and that to fix it, a bit more had to be cut off and the skin sealed above the bone. The doctor drew a big arrow on his arm just to make sure the surgeons chopped off the correct finger!

"Shall I give you a Twirl?"

This is a man in surprisingly high spirits for someone who's just lost his finger! After here I wasn't allowed to follow him into surgery and had to make do with the restaurant. It took about an hour and Dad said it was a "pleasant experience." Eh!? :-)

The Culprit

On the drive home we stopped at the house so I could see how Dad had skinned his finger. He dropped the red brickwork and got his finger caught inbetween the corner and the rock in the hole he'd dug. It was caught exactly how you see it pictured here. *Shudder*

Like any good son would do, I took Dad's severed body part home! But what could I do with it? It's not exactly something fit for the mantlepiece. I dug a small hole and buried it for Dad. (He didn't feel it was important to attend the ceremony.)

R.I.P. Dad's Finger.

All photos were taken on my iPhone, with no post-processing. I didn't have any of my other cameras with me so had to make do with this thing, however it certainly did the job.

A lot of people have asked me why I'd take photos of something so morbid? I don't feel I have to honour such a stupid question with a reply, but here it goes. I wanted to share our experience. Although it was a horrible thing to happen to my Dad, I had to try and make light of it somehow. My Dad takes photos all the time, but this time it was his turn to be in front of the camera.
