Lava Rebirth

On my recent photo shoot on the Big Island of Hawaii, we were passing miles and miles of black lava files. The lava was twisted up in all kinds of strange waves. Some shark, some smooth, some looked like rope even. I noticed the new growth coming out of the lava and asked our local friend Kai about it and he said that he's lived there his whole life and never seen growth in these fields before. I t sure looked cool with the ominous looking thunderclouds up about Mauna Loa, so I had Kai stop the car and I shot a hand full of panoramas. I particularly dug on this image because of the violent looking crack in the lava rock. Very graphic looking and so cool with the new growth and storm clouds...

Finding the location with some good old fashion...

I was getting ready recently to do a quick 3 day shoot on the Big Island of Hawaii. Of course I knew about the Volcanoes but still haven't been yet after all these years, but I really knew little else about the island other than it's very large and you drive a lot from place to place. This of course makes it very difficult to find the coolest locations for images because so many of them are located down very non descript roads. Often the kind of roads that rental car companies definitely don't want you driving on. Over the 1st day and a half, Joe and I got up in the dark and searched blind without success, then I asked a few local crew some questions about a spot supposedly nearby that has crashing surf on the black lava. I got a few different answers and finally at the end of the second day, we literally stumbled up the scene while actually scoping out a different image.
