MIAR Ambassador) and Malaysia Independent Animal Rescue (MIAR) president, Puspa Rani seek to separate myth from reality and promote pet adoption through this photo series. MIAR is a no-kill shelter in Malaysia that rescues abused and homeless dogs.

There are many misguided assumptions about homeless animals and the shelters that take them in. Animal shelters all over the world are overcrowded with homeless animals. These animals are often victims of cruelty, neglect, abuse and end up being put down. Pet adoption is one of the solutions that can help to alleviate this problem. However, there is a lot of apprehension when it comes to adopting pets from shelters. Animals everywhere are suffering, as a direct result of human activity.

Deforestation, illegal pet trade, exotic meat trade, pollution, cruelty, laboratory testing and vivisection are some of the many ways in which animals are being brutally exploited and victimized by humans. More and more species are becoming threatened with extinction. Those that are not threatened are being exploited for money.

Through these portraits, I seek to confront people with the captivating beauty of these animals and their dire plight.

I believe that living in harmony with the rest of our ecosystem is possible. There are many conservation efforts being carried out.

For these efforts to be successful, the majority of people need to be aware of the situation and speak out against cruelty to animals.
