Scott Nichol

Scott Nichol

Schooled as a photographer and practiced in traditional printmaking, his work is at once cinematic and somewhat lyrical, a story left to the imagination of the viewer.  Working in both landscapes and studio, he studies the figure and its purposeful place and within an ideal frame.  Within this frame lies the emotion and the contemplative nature of the solitary figure. When asked to describe his style, Scott says, "I tend to approach my work with a simple pre-visualization, an image that I see in my mind that serves as a rough sketch of what I'd like to accomplish with my subject.  This vision often changes once the model and I meet face to face.  Most models are highly creative and I tend to feed off of their energy, allowing ideas to flow and form freely.  It's truly a wonderful collaboration and I owe a debt of thanks to all of the women who have helped me to create these beautiful photos."

Jordan Street: Studio Nudes, 2008-2011

Published December 23rd, 2012

For the three years from 2008 until 2011, photographer Scott Nichol rented and worked in a large studio space to create some of his most striking works of figure photography. This new space presented a larger canvas that allowed him to photograph the nude figure with a more ambitious approach and allowed perspectives that were nearly impossible outside this space. Working on this larger stage afforded the work a sense of presence, both physically and emotionally.

This collection of 61 photographs explores the contemporary nude through themes of introspection, vulnerability, and empowerment. The pieces selected for this collection were mostly shot with traditional medium and large format film cameras, old Polaroid cameras, along with modern digital cameras.

Published August 4th, 2011

I will be showing 2 prints original palladium prints as part of the Manifest Gallery's 3rd annual NUDE show which opens on August 12 in Cincinnati, OH. I plan to make the road trip out there from PA, so if you're in the area, please come out and see the show. It's not just photographers, but painters, sculptors, sketch artists all united over the human form. I've seen the works juried into the show and they're truly fabulous!
