Simon Kivela’s photographic journey began as a teenager growing up in his former home of Hong Kong. He experimented shooting with different films on his Ricoh KR-5s, and used the bustling, neon, metropolis of HK as inspiration. It was here where he decided to pursue photography as a career.
This newly found passion led him to study at P.S.C. in Melbourne, Australia, and continuing from there he graduated from R.M.I.T. with a BA Arts (Photography). During those four years at university Simon discovered an early interest in digital photography and image post- production.
During his early twenties Simon travelled the world, and returning to Australia after a number of years, completed a Diploma of Multimedia Design at Swinburne University. Whilst studying he used his knowledge of post-production imaging and design to do contract work, setting the foundation for a career in digital imaging.
Simon spent a number of years freelancing in Melbourne, before joining the post-production department at UA Corp. As his retouching skills continued to develop, he gained essential commercial studio experience, and eventually lead a team of other retouchers in his department.
Today Simon calls London home, and continues to evolve as a professional digital retoucher. He has used his years of experience to streamline his workflow, and has developed important relationships with people in the industry, in both the UK and in Australia.
When not working, Simon still takes photographs, and still is inspired by the many fascinating destinations around the world.
