Star Rush is a Seattle documentary and street photographer, writer, and educator. She is an advocate of mobile photography, working exclusively with an iPhone 3Gs.
Rush's mobile photography explores the tug between past and present, the visual hiss and hums that evoke in visuals the listening experience of vinyl records. How do images mediate memories of a collective past, shape or dissect the cultural mythologies of an American Dream in recession? Her photos explore the mythos of mobility, independence, consumption, and the ethos of cool. These are the central ideas of her work, evoked in images of made-in-Detroit cars parked on contemporary streets, buildings and houses, mechanical objects, individuals in public spaces (often alone), and, frequently, empty seats.
Rush prefers to work in the "unrealness" of black and white whenever possible: “This is not life. It’s a photo of it, a recollection.” She describes place, people and objects as visually mediated artifacts of mundane, unstable remembrance, imbued with the remnants of popular culture of the 20th century as much as “real life” itself. Her mobile photography pursues the idea of pulling the past forward into lyrical, narrative images that transgress boundaries of “old” and “new.”
Her subjects are captured in natural light and public spaces with an unassuming, very mobile iPhone. The iphone enables capturing unguarded moments; it also imposes restraints that push the photographer into new spaces, similar to creating visual haikus.
Rush’s mobile photography has been exhibited in the U.S., most recently in Seattle, Philadelphia and Florida. Her work has been featured in print and electronic publications, such as Eye’em and iPhoneography.com, among others in the U.S. and Europe.
She is a founding member of Mobile Photo Group, www.mobilephotogroup.com, a contributing editor at iPhoneography.com, and a member of the Seattle artist cooperative, IDEA Odyssey.
