Sergio Tapiro Velasco

Sergio Tapiro is an award-winning photographer that specializes on nature photography and volcano photography. Parts of his work are defined by three topics: landscape, anthropology and science.

Photojournalist, nature and documentary photography, he won one World Press Photo award in 2016 in nature category selected between 82,951 images of 5,775 professional photojounalists from 128 countries. His winning photograph, "The Power of Nature" shows a volcano in eruption with a lightning crossing the scene, was exhibited in more than 100 cities of almost 50 countries around the world. He is one of the only two mexican photographers that have won into nature photography category on 60 years of prestigious World Press Photo Awards.

On 2017 he won the Grand Prize overall Award of National Geographic Travel Contest with the title "Photographer of the Year", and won 1st place on Nature Category. In this worldwide contest participated more than 15000 photographers of more than 45 countries.

On 2017 Sergio Tapiro won Windland Smith Rice first place on Landscape Category, partnered with Smithsonian Museum and Nature's Best Magazine. His image was selected between more than 26,000 pictures, from photographers in 59 countries.

On september of the same year, The Great Outdoors Contest of Photo District News magazine awarded Sergio as the Grand Prize winner, and IMS Photo Contest named one of his photos as the Mountain Photo of the Year 2017.

In 2017 he won too honorary mentions in Oasis Photocontest (Italy), Photomont (Spain) and Prix de la Photographie (France).

Nowadays Sergio Tapiro is one of the best known mexican photographers around the world.

Sergio Tapiro leads night and volcano photography workshops, and conferences for institutions and companies. He makes too commercial photography. He has been a participant, workshop teacher and speaker on universities, photographic events and meetings. His photos have been published on books and scientific researches; Sergio Tapiro images have been published in most of Mexican newspapers and in National Geographic, WIRED, CNN, Revista Cuartoscuro, Mexico desconocido, Artes de Mexico, Expansión.

On 2016 British Government honored him by taking part on a photographic expedition to Falkland Islands, on 2017 Mexican Embassy in Germany and the Mexican talent network Chapter Germany (Red de Talentos mexicanos Capitulo Alemania) invited Sergio Tapiro to exhibit and speak in Berlin. In Italy and Germany Sergio attended conferences and meetings with elementary school kids.

Sergio Tapiro is a member of Comunidad Mexicana de Fotógrafos de Naturaleza and represents Colima state within CMFN. Honorable photographer of the Ballet Folklórico de la Universidad de Colima. Has worked as a freelance photographer with agencies like EFE, AP, BBC, CUARTOSCURO among others.

Sergio Tapiro uses Nikon lenses and cameras, gitzo & manfrotto tripods, he has more than 120K followers on social networks, and loves to interact with people as speaker and instructor on photography workshops.
