Thomas Bruin

Age 27. Living in Glenrothes, Scotland.

I work full time as an Optometrist based in a large busy practice in Glenrothes, I also travel a lot with work serving the remote communities in the Highlands & Islands of Scotland.

Although photography is not my full time occupation it is my fulltime passion and I spend large amounts of my time exploring and continuing to learn photography. I got my first camera when I was around 10 years old a simple Kodak point and shoot film camera, the only controls it had were the shutter button the dial to wind on the film and a flash on/off switch. I made many frames with this camera and to this day I still have an album of pictures made with this camera. When I first got this camera I wanted to take pictures all the time but the limitations of the camera, cost of film & processing and generally being a 10 year old quickly got in the way and for year photography happen on at on day trips special events etc. and was never really a hobby in itself.

Fast forward to around 2006 I stated to really want to get into photography again. I was playing sports (Rugby, Kayaking and other adventure sports) and really into live music and I wanted to be able to capture a lot of this. I researched learned about what I needed and decided I really wanted a DSLR. Unfortunately budgetary constraints got in the way and instead I got a Fuji Bridge camera which was capable of full manual control. For a while this was a good compromise and I learned a bit about landscape shooting and shoot some sports and music. However for the type of thing I wanted to shoot I quickly ran into the limitation of the camera, it just wasn’t fast enough to get the action shots (it was slow to focus and low fps) and for the live music the High ISO performance was terrible (max 800ISO with lots of noise) and poor low light focusing. Due to not being able to consistently get what I wanted from my kit (and not being able to afford better) photography took a back seat to other things again

Fast Forward again to January 2011. After being away camping with a friend and having a play with their DSLR the photography bug had bitten again. I’d gotten the old camera back out but quickly discovered all the old limitations. Having been working full time for a while now, also married to my beautiful wife and having purchased our first house together I decided I was able to splash out on a DSLR for myself. Having removed most of the limitations of my equipment I have been able to get a lot more out of my photography and love every minute of my shooting.

At the moment I love shooting Live music and this is still something I want to do a lot more of. Having joined the Local camera club and having access to their studio I have also discovered a love for shooting people and love to create and work on concepts for more creative story telling images. I also shoot some landscape and sports work for a bit of fun.
