The Couple

Published November 9th, 2012

Driving along in the Kruger National Park one day, we were lucky enough to encounter a rather handsome mating pair of Lions. Although I am not a fan of humanising animals, we could not help but feel that the Lioness was quite coy around the male (she was certainly very pretty). As always, they took no notice of us, even wandering across the road through the vehicles. It was a rainy summer day so unfortunately this meant bad lighting, but these two look so wonderful together that I believe they demand a looking.

Coy Girl

This is one of the prettiest (wild) Lionesses I've seen. I think she knew it too as she wandered around us and attracted the male. Judging how they acted together, I would say that they were first or second day mating (still very alert and full of energy; as opposed to fourth or fifth day where they will be visibly exhausted).

Handsome Couple

She was eyeing him out in the previous picture and as he came across the road to her, she reacted in very typical "I am in heat" ways. This could be seen by the way she held herself, how she reacted to him and the fact that she almost seemed playful about it all.

The Flehmen Response

He had just licked where she had urinated and did the typical response of flehmen; this is where this Lion can use his sense of taste, 'suck in' scent of the urine to his Jacobsen Organ in the roof of his mouth and heighten his senses. What this basically means is that he could come across urine, smell it, and know how old the urine is, how old the animal is, was it male or female and, if female, is she in season or not. Pretty impressive apparatus really.

Pretty Girl

In this one, she almost looks too young to be mating with an adult male Lion. The monochrome combined with the cloudy day helps give her this faraway look.

Beast in the grass

The boy was lying up near her for a while and looked really pretty with the long grass 'in his way' so to speak.
