Tony Tomlinson

My passion for photography was ignited at an early age whilst growing up immersed in the rugged countryside and wonderful light of Scotland. My aim as a photographer is to create simple images that convey the feeling and emotion of a subject, be it landscape, seascape or objects. I look for how the subject makes me feel as much as how it looks. I like to see the beauty and form in everything around me and strive to convey that in my imagery. Making art is also a way for me to experience life more fully and with more intensity, to feel connected and vital, to investigate things, to explore the potential for discovery around every corner. Photography, for me, is all about curiosity; it has made me wonder, inquire and seek out. I work mainly with digital equipment but do on occasions switch back to the medium of film where I use a 1956 twin lens Rolleiflex. This allows me to immerse myself in a feeling of timeless nostalgia whilst creating black and white images. My work is influenced by classic photographers such as Jacques Henri Lartigue who, like me, was introduced to photography as a boy and spent his life photographing everything around him. When I am old and grey I hope to be able to look back over my body of work and see the story of my life. When you look at my pictures and come across one that emotionally reaches out to you then my work is done. They all represent how I felt at a place, at a particular time. It's impossible for me to know what they mean to you, but seeing people just stop and contemplate one of my prints never fails to amaze me.
