Christos Tsoumplekas

I was born in Heraklion, on the island of Crete in Greece in 1974 and studied photography at "FOCUS, Institute of Photography" in Athens from 1993 to 1996. My involvement with photography, however, had begun earler on, using a Zenit XP12.

Photography is a way of exploring and recording the world that surrounds me as I experience it from my standpoint. The pictures I take, come to life as the result of a need for personal expression and purgation!

By detaching myself from the subject, I try to see what lies beond the first appearance of people and things. Right from the start, I make an effort to be objective about the theme of the photograph and record it in its genuine state, without passing judgement on it. My intention is to document and reveal things that exist but are not apparent at a glance.

In many cases, my pictures are the result of spontaneous reaction to an optical stimulus; in other cases, vision did not play the first role; there have been instances, when a sound or a smell were the stimuli for shooting a very beloved picture! Feelings also play a role in the creative process; when in sorrow or enchantment, in panic and under stress, in serenity or meditation, my feelings come out in the pictures.

Throughtout the day, my vision undergoes training! I observe my surroundings, fragment and then recompose them, not necessarily with the purpose of taking a picture. I keep these observations in mind and call them up when I need to put them to use.
