Canadian artist, Roberta Murray, approaches photography much the same as the Pictorialist photographers of the late 19th century to tell a more personal, interpretative story. Based more on her dreams and imagination than reality, a fresh take on photographic imagery results. Roberta combines traditional techniques, historical ideas and contemporary tools, using the camera more as a paintbrush than a mechanical device in creating her images. After studying photography in the late 1980s, Roberta abandoned the medium and spent 14 years working in the fibre arts. It is this work which lead her back to photography using textile theories of colour, texture, and depth to create evocative representations of abstract ideas or moods.
Her work is represented internationally by Arcangel, Millennium Images, Getty Images, First Light/Design Pics, Soho Myriad, Great Big Canvas, and Gango Editions. In addition to her award winning photography Roberta is a fine art painter, earning acclaim in that medium as well as her photography.
