Brief Excursion to Colonial Santo Domingo

Published November 24th, 2012

So, I snuck away the other day for a short look around the colonial zone in Santo Domingo, where I´ve been living during the last year. The photos that follow document some of the interesting sights I saw along the way - hopefully you will find them to be of interest... enjoy!

Group of students at the Alcazar de Colon

Students on a field trip to the Alcazar de Colon (translates roughly to Columbus Castle). Built around 1511 according to the plaque placed on the building, it was the residence and headquarters for the son of Columbus, Diego, who was then serving as governer of the Spanish territories in the new world. It continued to be occupied by his descendants up to about 1577. The building is a restoration with only minor parts from the original structure.

Typical Street in the Colonial Zone

On this particular street is the house where Christopher Colombus spent his last time in the new world (about three weeks or so, I´m told).
